Diet
These vicious predators swoop through the air to snatch up bees, wasps, and even other flies. If food is scarce, they will not hesitate to hunt and devour other cannibalflies.
Defense
With their loud buzz and fuzzy, black-and-yellow striped abdomens, they mimic stinging bumblebees well. This disguise and their large size are usually enough to deter potential predators.
Hunting Strategy
Armed with massive compound eyes and explosive flight speed, they perch quietly and ambush their prey right out of the sky.
Liquefying Shot
To eat, these flies use a hollow beak called a proboscis to stab their prey. They inject neurotoxins and enzymes that instantly paralyze the victim and liquefy its insides so the fly can drink them out.
Field Marks
Their bright red feet give this species its name. They are also identified by a bristly mustache (called a mystax) that acts as a visor, protecting their eyes from squirming prey.
