Sit PrettyDog sits upright on haunches with front paws raised
A core-strength trick. The dog balances on their haunches with front paws lifted. Think meerkat. Many dogs need weeks to build the muscles for this. Use a wall or your hand for support at first and build duration slowly.

- 4× per week, 3 min each

- Small soft treats, A wall or corner for initial support
Prerequisites
Your dog should know these words first:
How to teach sit pretty
Lure
From a sit, raise a treat slowly above the dog's nose
- Lift the treat just high enough that the paws come off the ground
- If the dog stands, you went too high. Keep it lower
- Let the dog lean against a wall or your leg for balance at first
- Mark any paw lift, even a fraction of a second
- This is physically demanding. 3 reps is a session at first
Hand Signal
Closed fist raised slowly above the dog's head
- Same upward motion, empty hand
- Add duration in 1-second steps. The core muscles need time to develop
- Remove the wall support gradually over weeks, not days
Verbal Cue
Name it once the dog can hold 3 seconds unassisted
- Say the word, raise the hand, mark the hold
- Do not ask for sit pretty after vigorous exercise. Tired muscles wobble
- Build to 10 seconds over several weeks
Success criteria
- Unlearned
- Does not lift front paws from a sit
- In progress
- Holds sit pretty for 5 seconds on the word alone
- Mastered
- Holds sit pretty for 10+ seconds, balanced, in any environment
Common mistakes
- Asking for too much duration before the core muscles are ready
- Removing wall support too early, which causes the dog to fall and lose confidence
- Raising the lure too high, causing the dog to stand instead of balance
- Long sessions that exhaust the muscles. This is like planks for dogs
